The AUC Department of Political Affairs (DPA) and University of South Africa (UNISA) agree to collaborate on Enhancing Election Management through Capacity Building of Member States’ Electoral Stakeholders in Africa

The Department of Political Affairs of the African Union Commission (AUC) and the University of South Africa (UNISA) have agreed to collaborate on Enhancing Election Management through Capacity Building of Member States' Electoral Stakeholders in Africa.

Following a series of working meetings between the DPA leadership and staff and UNISA Institute for African Renaissance (IARS)'s Management of Democratic Elections in Africa (MDEA) Programme Facilitators, led by Prof. Shadrack Gutto, in Addis Ababa, from 30 to 31 May 2016, the two parties agreed to develop and implement an initial One-Year Working Programme to lay the foundations for future collaboration on the Electoral Challenges in Africa in line with the existing AU-UNISA Memorandum of Understanding. Among the activities the two institutions agreed to implement within the first year of collaboration are:

(a) High Level Seminars and related engagement;

(b) Alumni database exchange;

(c) Teaching and facilitation on MDEA Accredited Cohorts

(d) Knowledge production and management;

(d) Capacity building of agreed to urgent cases based on African Union Election Observation Mission (AUEOM) reports amongst other sources;

(e) Targeted, civil society, gender and youth capacity building; and

(f) Identification and complementarity in resource mobilization for electoral capacity building.
