SOUTH AFRICA AGRICULTURE DEPT STEPS UP SURVEILLANCE FOR BIRD FLU FOLLOWING OUTBREAK IN MPUMALANGA

Manage the situation. Departmental spokesperson Bomikazi Molapo says the farm is now under quarantine and is in the process of culling more than 25,000 chicken.

More than 24,000 were slaughtered at another farm in Villiers, on the border with Free State Province and Molapo said both provinces had increased surveillance measures.

We are concerned, but so far there are two cases that have been confirmed in Mpumalanga province. We are asking all farmers to beef up their security measures, we have asked all our provincial vets to increase their surveillance and we asking all farmers, commercial as well as backyard farmers, to report any case of high mortalities to the department, so that we can send out our vets to them.
