Detective Constable, Jonathan Clark, has recently returned to St Helena having completed training in the UK to become a Police Offender Manager within the St Helena Police Service.
DC Clark left the Island at the end of December 2018, travelling to his home area in the north east of England to complete specialist training with the Cleveland Police.
The accredited course began with time in the classroom learning the role, the law, and understanding the different behaviours that individuals may have. DC Clark then spent time in the community shadowing the Police Offender Management Team, obtaining best practice and an understanding of different techniques in order to best support individuals and prevent further offending.
Since returning to St Helena, DC Clark has taken on his new role and now has responsibility for all registered sex offenders on-Island. This involves working closely with other agencies like the Safeguarding and Health Directorates, as well as the Probation Team who support these individuals during their sentence.
DC Clark said:
I really enjoyed the opportunity to complete this training and improve my understanding of why people sexually offend. In my role, I hope to be able to work with individuals to support them in achieving a positive, offence-free future.
